In oil drilling, adding weighting materials appropriately to the drilling fluid can better control wellbore pressure.Traditional weighting materials such as calcium carbonate and barite can effectively increase the density of drilling fluids, but they also face a series of problems such as formation damage, particle settling, and wellbore corrosion. There is an urgent need for a new type of drilling fluid weighting material to ensure the normal operation of oil drilling operations. In this study, due to the use of oil-based drilling fluid in the target operating area, using calcium sulfate as a weighting chemical agent is a good choice.Calcium sulfate,as a low-cost and easy to prepare chemical material, was used as a weighting material for oil-based drilling fluids in feasibility studies through multiple experiments such as density, rheological properties, and filtration loss.It was compared with traditional weighting materials such as calcium carbonate and barite.Calcium sulfate was mixed in the basic drilling fluid at three different mass concentrations (0.06,0.120,0.165 mg·L-1) in the experiment. The results showed that calcium sulfate better controlled drilling fluid loss compared to other weighting materials tested at the same mass concentration of 0.12 mg·L-1,proving that calcium sulfate is a good drilling fluid weighting material.
