Performance Evaluation of Barite Water-Based Drilling Fluid
Drilling fluids serve a variety of functions and are an important part of drilling operations, and the type and concentration of the weighting material has a significant impact on the properties of the drilling fluid.Barite is a commonly used weighting material in the oil and gas industry. In this paper, the effect of barite dosage on water-based drilling fluids was evaluated. The properties of the drilling fluid including density,pH,filtration loss and rheological parameters were studied, and the effect of barite dosage on filtration loss and filter cake sealing properties was evaluated. The density,pH,and filtration loss were measured at room temperature with a differential pressure of 0.69 MPa.The rheological parameters were tested at 121℃.The results showed that both density and pH increased linearly with increasing of barite dosage.Filtration loss, filter cake thickness and permeability increased with barite dosage increasing and were exponentially related to barite dosage.Filter cake porosity was inversely related to barite dosage, and the rheological properties included plastic viscosity, yield point, ratio of yield point to plastic viscosity, and gel strength at different time, which were positively correlated with barite dosage.
