Organizational Creativity and Innovation Performance:The Moderating Role of Long-term Orientation and Strategic Flexibility
In the current landscape, the escalating trend of comprehensive decoupling in science and technology between China and the United States is increasingly apparent.Simultaneously,as China's high-quality economic development has entered the deep-water zone of reform,a significant issue arises—the swift enhancement of comprehensive national strength contrasts starkly with the sluggishness in the management and transformation abilities of enterprises'innovation processes.Recognized as a pivotal source for rapidly improving innovation performance and securing future market competitive advantages, organizational creativity emerges as a strategic tool for enterprises to navigate the dynamic market demands. In the face of a highly uncertain market environment, the impact of organizational creativity on innovation performance is directly shaped by the redundancy of organizational resources under uncertain conditions. These resources are intricately linked to the long-term orientation and resource flexibility of the organization. The impediment of organizational inertia poses a challenge to the successful transformation of creative ideas into innovative outcomes.Addressing this challenge becomes imperative to enhance the efficiency of innovation processes. This study focuses on 318 Chinese firms, analyzing and testing the moderating role of long-term orientation and strategic flexibility,as well as their interaction,in the relationship between organizational creativity and innovation performance. The slope differences test method is employed to discern the varied effects of organizational creativity on innovational performance under different interaction states of long-term orientation and strategic flexibility.Empirical results indicate that strategic flexibility, along with its interaction with long-term orientation, reinforces the relationship between organizational creativity and innovation performance.Particularly, when both strategic flexibility and long-term orientation are high, the impact of organizational creativity on innovation performance is most pronounced.Diverging from previous literature, this paper contributes on three aspects.First,it empirically expands the research on the boundary effect of organizational creativity on firm innovation performance, affirming the significance of resource allocation in the implementation of innovative ideas.Second, employing a combined perspective of organizational innovation process and contingency theory, the study empirically analyzes the joint moderating effect of the interaction between long-term orientation and strategic flexibility. This expands the understanding of the boundary effect of organizational creativity on enterprise innovation performance.Lastly, the slope control method is utilized to compare and analyze the differentiated effects of different interaction modes of long-term orientation and strategic flexibility on the relationship between organizational creativity and innovation performance. This distinguishes the degree of influence of organizational creativity on innovation performance under three different interaction situations, further validating the pivotal role of resource allocation in the implementation of innovative ideas.Drawing from organizational innovation theory and a contingency perspective, the research findings furnish a theoretical foundation for scholars and managers in comprehending the internal influence mechanism of organizational creativity on innovation performance. Moreover,it offers valuable management insights for enterprise managers to efficiently transform creative ideas into innovative achievements.
