Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics:Discipline Orientation,Research Object and Research Mainline
China's remarkable economic achievements and its comprehensive mission to build a strong,modern socialist country underscore the need for a systematic economic theory.This theory must reveal the laws of socialist economic development uniquely adapted to Chinese characteristics and provide practical guidance for socialist modernization in China.Although there is consensus on the importance of developing a socialist political science that reflects Chinese realities,significant divergences remain regarding core issues,particularly concerning the discipline's nature,research scope,and primary theoretical focus.Guided by Marxist theory and methodology,this paper approaches the subject through a synthesis of three essential elements:the universal principles of socialist economic development,the unique trajectory of China's modernization,and the current stage in building a modern socialist state.It offers an in-depth analysis of the disciplinary orientation,research focus,and primary thematic concerns of a socialist political economy shaped by Chinese characteristics.The paper establishes that socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics falls within the realm of theoretical economics.This classification stems from its disciplinary identity as an extension of socialist economics in China,constituting a broad theoretical interpretation of socialism's core characteristics and intrinsic dynamics in the Chinese context.Within a four-tiered disciplinary framework-comprising the theoretical system of socialism in the new era,socialist economics with Chinese characteristics,socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics,and the socialist market economy-socialist political economy occupies a significant and distinct position.The dual objective of illuminating the underlying laws governing China's socialist economic development and providing insights to guide the modernization process further defines the research scope.In particular,this discipline extends and reinterprets the foundations of Marxist political economy.It focuses on the contradictions within socialist productive forces and production relations,as well as those between the socialist economic base and superstructure.Additionally,the social requirements of socialism,the primary societal contradictions in China,and the transformations driven by the latest technological advancements indicate that the main theoretical focus should be on harmonizing social equity and market efficiency.This principle is central to the structure and purpose of socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics.In advancing beyond prior research,this paper broadens the conceptual and empirical focus of socialist political economy.It emphasizes the importance of studying socialist productivity in detail,particularly by expanding the connotations and interactions among labor,means of labor,and objects of labor under the impetus of technological innovation.Further,it advocates for a rigorous examination of how the socialist superstructure influences the economic foundation,emphasizing the evolving dynamics between government and market under the comprehensive leadership of the Communist Party of China.This work thus provides an integrative framework for understanding socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics in the context of major global transformations and China's current era of development.It aligns theoretical generality with Chinese specificity,proposing a pathway for constructing a uniquely Chinese political economy that strengthens China's international discourse and fosters an autonomous knowledge system.
