A Study on Youth's"Tanking"Culture from the Perspective of Post-subculture
The contradiction between negative and positive elements in youth's"tanking"culture has sparked heated discussions. This paper takes post-subcultural theory as the theoretical support and research starting point, and analyzes the youth's"tanking"culture through online ethnography to reveal its cultural characteristics and generation mechanism.Research has found that"tanking"culture presents post-subculture characteristics of focusing on self-dwarfing emotional style, weakening individual narrative of group belonging, and flexible decision-making based on situation. There are four types of"tanking"practices:stress release, daily experience,self-abandonment stop loss, and suspension-based selection. The relatively abundant material conditions and diverse values during China's transformation period are the dual structural foundation for the formation of the youth's"tanking"culture. In this context, young people deconstruct traditional values at both the individual and social levels, and rationalize their various"tanking"practices in three aspects of life goals, lifestyle, and social mentality. The bidirectional interaction between media and users makes"tanking"culture spread quickly across the cultural circle, and generalizes its connotation."Tanking"is not a passive avoidance in a completely pessimistic sense, but rather a continuous reflection on the definition of the situation and the achievement of goals, and serves as a self-adjustment focused on other more meaningful things.
