Bricolage Wedding in China:Marriage Ritual Practices of Urban Young People
Drawing on qualitative research with 18 young couples living in Guangzhou, this study delves into their marriage ritual practices and the transition of urban marriage rituals in China.A theoretical focus on the bricolage process indicates the urban young people's subjectivity in their own life project, simultaneously incorporating the consideration of financial pressure and romantic imagination into their weddings.Couples thus exhibit a fusion of economic rationality and creativity in the process of planning and execution.Wedding becomes a showcase of personal identity for urban youths when marriage rituals are regarded as an exhibition of individual experiences and couple memories.Despite becoming individual-focused,traditional collective rituals, such as banquets, still matter in enhancing the networks of both young couples and their nuclear family members.Meanwhile, the media-rich resources serve as pivotal constituents in the tapestry of their weddings.Urban young people's preference and the agency in wedding planning and exhibition are shifting from conventional grand and opulent marriage rituals to a"bricolage-style"model,which allows simplicity as well as demonstrations of personality and aesthetics.
