ASEAN States'Autonomy and the Formation of Post-War Southeast Asian Regional Order:An Explanation from the Perspective of the Ritual Governance
By emphasizing the people's voluntarily observance of the ritual institution based on the spirit of ritual, the perspective of ritual governance derived from the traditional Chinese societal experience could properly explain the formation of post-war Southeast Asian regional order. On the basis of relational theory, the perspective of ritual governance can not only transcend the shortcoming of the material-ideological dichotomy, but also explain the interaction mechanism between ritual basis, ritual institution, and specific practices through the assignment of legitimacy and the focus effect.Based on the shared reflections of colonial experiences before the World War Ⅱ and the common need of building a community for mutual support and safety of small and medium states, the ASEAN States'Autonomy becomes the ritual basis of post-war Southeast Asian regional order. To fulfill the autonomy demand,ASEAN and its member states have gradually developed internal ritual institution to regulate interactions among ASEAN member countries and external ritual institution to govern interactions between ASEAN nations and external actors in the regional governance process.Anchored on the legitimacy granted from ASEAN States'Autonomy, the internal and external ritual institution within Southeast Asia have provided a focal point for interactions between entities within and outside the region.
