China in the View of East Asians:The Micro Examination of Sino-U.S.Competition
In recent years, with the adjustment of the United States'strategic layout in the Asia-Pacific region,Sino-U.S.competition has become a prevailing trend in East Asia.Against this backdrop, how do East Asian perceive the rising China? The Asian Barometer Survey project conducted opinion surveys from 2010 to 2020,providing ample data to dynamically examine the East Asians'attitudes towards China.Dynamic analysis of three rounds of survey data indicates that over ten years,in general,China's influence in the East Asian region has steadily increased. However, public evaluations of this trend have been somewhat negative, reflecting the concerns and apprehensions of East Asian populations. From a micro psychological perspective, the more differences between the political cognition and cultural values of the people and the Chinese mainstream values, the more attention to China's regional influence will be attached, and their evaluations become more negative. From a macro perspective, the assumption of office by Donald Trump and the introduction of the"Indo-Pacific strategy"have had a significant impact on the regional landscape of East Asia, leading to divergent attitudes among the populations of various countries towards China's influence.Understanding the factors affecting China's regional influence is of vital importance for China to accurately grasp the regional situation, further expand its international influence, and enhance its international image in the context of Sino-American competition.
