The Agricultural Development in the Gan River Basin and the Status Changes of Jiangzhou in the Six Dynasties
The population in the Gan River basin, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Gan River recovered and grew in the Six Dynasties(dynasties of Wu,Jin,Song,Qi,Liang and Chen). With the improvement of agricultural technology and the restoration and expansion of arable land, the grain production in the region continued to increase. As a result, since Wu and Jin dynasties,Jiangzhou had become an important grain-producing area.Large state-owned granaries such as Yuzhang Granary and Diaoqi Granary were established in the north of Yuzhang City to centrally store and transport grain for supply to the capital region of Jiankang and local military governments. In addition, local magnates and merchants also purchased grain from the Gan River basin for transportation to other areas. It can be said that the agricultural development and grain export from the Gan River basin in the Six Dynasties elevated the political and economic status of Jiangzhou and facilitated a transformation in the regional pattern of the dynastic states.
