"Common Defense and Mutual Aid"is the Core Quality of Ocean Culture:A Case Study on Zhoushan Fishermen's Brave Rescue of British Prisoners of War
In September 1942,British Commonwealth soldiers captured in Hong Kong were sent in batches to Japan for work. The second batch of captives totaling 1816 boarded the ship"Lisbon Maru"to Japan. On October 1st,when the ship was sailing towards the eastern waters of the Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang Province,it was attacked by the US submarine"Perch".The next day,it towed to the waters of Dongji Island and then sank, resulting in a human tragedy.Just as the prisoners were in dire straits, the Chinese fishermen's fleet suddenly sailed into the Japanese naval fleet, risking everything to rescue the drowning prisoners. The fishermen's heroic act reversed the entire situation, truly demonstrating the core quality of ocean culture which accumulated for thousands of years and the ocean people, namely,"common defense and mutual aid".This is a case that occurred during the Anti-Japanese War,but it deeply reflects the excellent quality of marine society and culture. This is a unique quality that ocean people developed in earning a living in the sea over thousands of years, and it can withstand any test of rough waves.
