From"Lantern Tour"to"Yearly Worship":the Inheritance and Changes of the Lantern Festival in Xintianpo Shang Village in Maoming City,Guangdong
The"Yearly Worship"(Nian Li) widely popular in western Guangdong serves as an important window for us to understand the modern inheritance of traditional culture. By the Qing Dynasty, the customs of Yearly Worship had become very prevalent in western Guangdong, and there was a clear distinction between Shangyuan Lantern Festival and the Yearly Worship. However,by the period of the Republic of China, some villages had not participated in the Yearly Worship yet, instead maintaining their original festival traditions. Take Xintianpo Shang Village, located in Gongguan Town,Maoming City,Guangdong Province, for example. Before 1949,only"Lantern Tour"(You Deng),rather than the Yearly Worship, was held on the Lantern Festival in the village. It was not until the 1980s that the village resumed the celebration of the Lantern Festival and renamed it Yearly Worship,as the Yearly Worship regained popularity throughout western Guangdong. By discussing the similarities and differences in the main rituals and content of the two festivals——"Lantern Tour"prevalent in the period of the Republic China and the contemporary"Yearly Worship",we can better ex-plore the changes and inheritance of rural festivals represented by Yearly Worship in Western Guangdong.
