The Construction and Symbolization of the Sound for the Ceremony of"Towing Dragon Boat"in Zhongbu Village,Taihe County
Ritual sound has emerged as an important academic concept in the past two decades. It analyzes the sig-nificance of sound within the overall context of rituals as a cultural performance process in anthropological terms. Focus-ing on the ceremony of"towing dragon boat"in Taihe County,this article combines invention of traditions with the theo-ries and methods of symbolic anthropology. Based on the notion of"sound symbolism",it explores the connotation and meaning of sound within the symbiotic environment of ceremonies or beliefs. For the ceremony of"towing dragon boat",the"sound spectrum"formed by the cultural performance of the performers metaphorically moves from"representation"to"meaning",forming a dynamic cycle of"symbol (basic unit)-ritual (collective)-symbol (meaning)". While maintaining the effectiveness of the ritual,sound not only endows it with a dual function of entertaining participants and spectators,but also holds different symbolic meanings in different ritual stages.
