Huizhou Culture from the Perspective of Fang Qing,a Folk Scholar in the Qing Dynasty——Centered on the Anthology of Danzhai
According to the Collection of Huizhou Rare Folk Literature(Huizhou Minjian Zhenxi Wenxian Jicheng),Fang Qing was a rural scholar in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty and he was a Confucian and a businessman all his life.He read everything in books and was good at studying literature, compiling genealogies, composing poems and calligraphy. He not only recorded the last words of the family separation contract in Huizhou villages, but also described the phenomenon that Huizhou people attached great importance to feng shui and chose graveyards based on judgement of auspiciousness of the terrain to seek good fortune.Under the influence of Neo-Confucianism of Xin'an and the propaganda of the patriarchal system, and out of the actual needs of the government to stabilize the Hui merchants'families, women were mostly educated to be chaste and keep their chastity for their husbands. The norms regulated women's words and deeds, which was conducive to maintaining public order and good customs. At the same time,Fang Qing was keen on the construction of rural social order by recommending virtuous people and promoting moral integrity. In his writing, geographical landscape of Panxi in the south of She County was depicted as picturesque and various characters were credible and verifiable. It can be seen that Fang Qing played an important role in the dissemination of Huizhou culture, social ethics and rural social order.
