The Construction of Regional Social Networks and Settlement Landscapes in the Xin'an River Basin in the Ming and Qing Dynasties——An Investigation Centered on the Filial Clan of Jiang
Xin'an River is located in the mountainous areas of southern Anhui and western Zhejiang.The river val-leys within the river basin,as natural passages,have become important channels for communication between Anhui and Zhejiang as well as regions in the south of the Yangtze River.They have always been the frequent areas for population migration and settlement.This article analyzes the migration and separation of the Jiang clan in the Xin'an River Basin,finding that its settlements span three counties in Anhui and Zhejiang provinces.Each branch of the clan worked together to compile genealogy,which strengthened the clan organization based on blood ties and established a clan social network that transcends administrative divisions and geographical barriers.The social network had a major influence on geographi-cal environment and public space of the settlements of the filial clan of Jiang.Through shaping the Eight Scenic Spots,it created a harmonious and peaceful human-land relations and social atmosphere.It is the gathering behaviors and relevant activities of clans in the Xin'an River Basin that have become important factors in the construction of clan society on the one hand,and have led to changes in the relationship between population and settlements,human and nature on the other hand,thus shaping the unique regional society and settlement landscape of the Xin'an River Basin.
