Study on the Folk Culture of the Xiao Family's Beliefs in Ganzhou,Jiangxi Province
The three surnames of Xiao,Guo and Li represent three families fishing on the Zhangjiang River,Gongjiang River,and Ganjiang River in Ganzhou City,Jiangxi Province,among which the Xiao family boasts the longest history of fishing.As early as the Ming Dynasty,the Xiao family migrated upstream along the Ganjiang River from Taihe,Ji'an City to the outskirts of Ganzhou City,where they made a living by fishing on the river,and preserved a large number of fishermen's beliefs and customs over the centuries.With the change of the times,by the late 1970s,the fishermen in Ganzhou had basically abandoned their traditional livelihood.However,due to the influence of the living habits that have been continued for generations,these fishing families'folklore related to fishing can be seen everywhere in today's life,especially their deeply-rooted beliefs and customs.This paper focuses on the study of the beliefs and customs of the Xiao family in Shahekou,and explores the connections between them and water,fishing and life.
