Dong Zhongshu and his academic study intersect with Liu He's ideological interests. However, they were not mentioned in the archaeological materials unearthed from Haihun marquis mausoleum and Dong's name was omitted intentionally in the inscription on the Confucius mirror. This is not coincidental, but rather a deliberate avoidance attitude adopted by Liu He.One reason for it is political taboos and a high-pressure situation. It became imperative to follow a principle in Dong's study, namely,"adhering to morality without defaming superiors, and employing wisdom without endangering oneself".Another reason for it stems from positional conflicts and rules in academy.Liu He inherited the tradition of his mentor and emphasized"kingly way"and"propriety and righteousness".According to the principle of"always quoting one's mentor without daring to be presumptuous",his deliberate omission of Dong's name and even downgrading and deleting references to Dong's teachings, became a highly academic and reasonable choice.
