Local Time,Empire Metaphor and Social Order——A Case Study of a Folk Belief in Taihang Mountain Village
Quanhu Village in Shahe City is located at the eastern foothill of Taihang Mountain.Since the period of Yanyou emperor of the Yuan Dynasty,the"Nine-dragon sacrifice"(九龙祭祀)has gradually evolved into an important folk belief in this region. It has constantly been updated over the local time and developed into a provincial intangible cultural heritage with rich local atmosphere.The"Nine-dragon sacrifice"carried a core connotation of loyalty and filial piety, besides praying for rain.In the Ming and Qing dynasties,it rose from the folk belief to the emperors'"Royal Sacrifice"(御 祭),which constructed a regional"Empire Metaphor"with a great impact in southern Hebei region.Such sacrifice activities as"Nine-dragon Patrolling Street"(九龙巡街),"Nine-curve Yellow River Array"(九曲黄河阵)and"Providing Meals and Singing Sultra"(供膳唱经)ensured the continuation of folk faith on the timeline, and the gods of ethics shaped by temples and other symbols imposed the thoughts of the times on beliefs.Times, regions, fields and other factors have allowed"the King of Nine-dragon"(九龙大王)to act as the guardian of moral laws and mining safety. The collision of times and metaphors also reflects the prosperity and peace of the society.
