Bian Daheng and his son Bian Yuan were both prominent literati of the early Southern Song dynasty, but are not recorded in the History of Song. The life and deeds of Bian Yuan are mostly deduced from local histories and bibliographies, and his writings have been lost, with only some annotations on Du Fu's poems being preserved through various collections of annotations.Cai Mengbi's Annotations on Du Fu's Poems preserves the most annotations, and some different versions are cited in the Southern Song revised edition of Wen Yuan Ying Hua.Annotations of Du Fu's Poems by a Thousand Scholars and Annotations on Du Fu's Poems by Qian Qianyi also have citations, which, combined with selections and notes from poetry talks, allow for a comprehensive view.Bian Yuan's annotations have high value in collating variant characters, analyzing geographic and cultural terms, mutual verification of poetry and history, collecting lost works, and distinguishing forgeries. From the existing literature, one can still glimpse the identity recognition and emotional resonance of grassroots literati who moved from the north to the south after the Jingkang Incident through their annotations on Du Fu's poems.
