The"Epitaph and Preface for the Former Chaosanlang,Acting Sihu of Luzhou,Lord Wang(Shaowen)of Langya",written by Du Shenyan and with calligraphy by Song Zhiwen, was unearthed in Luoyang,Henan. This epitaph is considered a precious artifact.Upon its discovery, some questioned its authenticity.Scholars have since conducted research and provided explanations. However,a few years later, doubts resurfaced. Some critics pointed to the use of the old era name"the second year of Yanzai"as evidence of forgery. This paper holds that the usage of era names in historical texts is complex due to various factors such as transcription errors, the perpetuation of old era names, and compilers'mistakes. The perpetuation of old era names needs thorough analysis. The authenticity of the text can be verified through the characteristics of words, such as the use of terms related to the Tang Dynasty's imperial examination system and the application of allusions.Additionally, the newly created characters by Empress Wu Zetian and the correction of mistaken characters can be examined for verification. Moreover, the authenticity can be comprehensively verified through the lineage, deeds, thoughts, and social interactions of the individuals mentioned.
