Field measurements of permeability coefficients of riverbed sediments in the Tongliao section of the Xiliao River
The permeability coefficients of riverbed sediments in the Tongliao section of the Xiliao River were measured in situ using different methods to obtain the vertical permeability coefficients at each point. Sediment samples were also taken from the surface of the river bottom at and near the locations of the exploratory pits, soil sample pits, permeameter seepage test, vertical pipe test, seepage pit method seepage test, and double-ring seepage test, and then from different depths where the lithology had changed significantly, and then brought back to the laboratory and analyzed in the laboratory for particle analyses,in order to explore the relationship between the coefficient of permeability of the riverbed sediments and the particle gradation. The results show:The permeability coefficient increases as the sand and gravel content of the riverbed sediments increases;conversely, the permeability coefficient decreases as the clay content of the riverbed sediments increases. The particle gradation of sediments is an important factor affecting the permeability coefficient, and the particle gradation has a great influence on the pore size, shape and size of the pores in the sediments. The results of the study can provide reliable hydro-geological parameters for calculating the exchange between surface water and groundwater, and thus improve the accuracy of the results of groundwater resources evaluation.
