Using mean daily air temperature in winter of 15 stations in Jilin province from 1961 to 2005, the occurrence numbers and intensity of cold events and their interannual and interdecadal changes in Jilin province were studied with the standard of cold wave and k index defined by this paper. The results showed that there was a decrease trend of cold events in Jilin province in 45 years; there was an interdacadal change of decrease of cold event numbers from 1960s to 1990s, and the number of cold event increased since 2000; during the period of cold winter (1961 to 1986), the number of cold event decreased, during the period of warm winter (1987 to 2005 ) , the number of cold event increased; there was not a clear trend of cold event intensity in 45 years. Interdecadal change of East Asian Winter Monsoon was consistent with air temperature in winter and the number of cold event.
