Impact of urban shrinkage on evolution of ecological environment quality in the Old Industrial Base of Northeast China
The old industrial cities in the process of transformation are prone to shrinking. The energy con-sumption,pollutant emissions, and environmental degradation of these cities are generally higher than those of other cities. Therefore,it is worthwhile to further explore the evolution of the ecological environment quality of old industrial bases under the influence of urban shrinkage. This paper uses the 34 municipal districts of prefec-ture-level cities in the Old Industrial Base of Northeast China as the research units. The research period is from 2010 to 2020.Firstly,the entropy value method is used to calculate the ecological environment quality index and its 3 dimensions index of ecological environment pressure, state, and response with the help of PSR(Pres-sure-State-Response)environmental assessment model, and the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of the ecological environment quality of shrinking cities in the Old Industrial Base of Northeast China are ana-lyzed.And then, based on the panel data regression model, the effect of urban shrinkage on ecological environ-ment quality and its heterogeneities are analyzed. Finally, based on the threshold regression model, this paper analyzes the nonlinear effects of urban shrinkage on ecological environment quality at different degrees of shrinkage. The results show that:1)20 cities out of 34 cities in the Old Industrial Base of Northeast China have experienced shrinkage, and most of them are resource-based cities and old industrial cities. The overall level of the ecological environment quality of shrinking cities is low,but shows a fluctuating upward trend.During the research period, the gap between shrinking cities and growing cities is decreasing.Besides, there is a significant spatial positive correlation between the improvement of ecological environment quality and the degree of urban shrinkage.2)From the perspective of different urban shrinkage stages, the impact of urban shrinkage on ecological environment quality is not significant in the initial stage of shrinkage, negative in the mid-term,and positive in the later stage.3)From the overall perspective, the degree of urban shrinkage has a significant positive impact on the ecological environment quality of shrinking cities. This positive impact is in-fluenced by the threshold regulation of financial level and resource dependence.
