Digital Economy and Urban Carbon Emission Performance:Mechanism and Spatial Effect
The article builds upon the theoretical mechanisms linking the digital economy to carbon emission ef-ficiency and establishing evaluation criteria for both digital economy and carbon emission performance. It empir-ically investigates the role and spatial effects of the digital economy on urban carbon emission efficiency in Chi-na.Key findings are as follows. The digital economy's overall development level is steadily increasing, but with notable disparities between regions.Carbon emission efficiency demonstrates a fluctuating upward trend, yet remains generally low.Robustness tests confirm that the digital economy significantly enhances urban carbon e-mission efficiency.Mechanism analyses indicate that this is primarily achieved through advancements in green technology, the optimization of industrial structures and the growth of green finance.Heterogeneity analyses reveal that the digital economy notably improves carbon emission efficiency in eastern cities, areas with ample human capital, highly urbanized regions, and cities experiencing low fiscal pressure.Spatial analyses demon-strate that the development of the digital economy effectively enhances carbon emission efficiency both locally and in neighboring urban areas. These findings underscore the pivotal role of the digital economy in bolstering urban carbon emission efficiency through various mechanisms and spatial influences, emphasizing the impor-tance of green technologies and structural optimizations in achieving environmental sustainability goals.
