Spatial identification and planning strategy of traditional village cluster areas:A case study of mountainous and hilly regions in Zhejiang province
Traditional village conservation and utilization have shifted from the protection of individual villages to the comprehensive protection of regional areas. However, the current approach, which relies solely on the identification of clustered areas based on the spatial aggregation of traditional villages, overlooks the'point'and'linear'historical and cultural elements with conservation value among rural settlements. It also fails to consider the supportive role of socio-economic factors in the practice of contiguous conservation and utilization. This study takes the mountainous and hilly regions of Zhejiang province as research area, integrating techniques such as kernel density analysis and local spatial clustering analysis. It identifies traditional village cluster areas based on the spatial aggregation of traditional villages and the historical-cultural elements. The study comprehensively considers the vitality of socio-economic development in rural areas, incorporating four dimensions of features:living convenience, industrial foundation, infrastructure construction, and scenic resources. It uses these indicators to identify priority development areas and general protection areas for traditional village clusters and proposes conservation recommendations and strategies. In the mountainous and hilly regions of Zhejiang,a total of 18 traditional village cluster areas were identified, including 12 priority protection areas and 6 general protection areas.By adopting targeted measures such as point-line-belt-surface,strong-weak linkage, and overall collaboration, the study aims to promote the sustainable development of cluster areas. The research framework and methods presented in this paper can serve as a reference for the identification and planning of traditional village cluster areas for contiguous conservation and utilization in other regions of China.
