Evolution differentiation mechanism of economic resilience in the Bohai Rim region based on the adaptive cycle theory
The adaptive cycle theory provides a new perspective for the study of regional development path and the evolution of economic resilience, but relevant empirical and case studies still need to be explored.Based on the driving factors and evolutionary process of the adaptive cycle theory and regional economic resilience, this study constructed a research framework for the evolution differentiation of economic resilience in the Bohai Rim region. After analyses of the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of regional economic resilience, the adaptive cycle stages of regional economic resilience evolution were identified, and then the Weaver-Thomas model was employed to classify the industry driving force of economic resilience evolution and analyze its mechanism. The results indicate that the economic resilience of the Bohai Rim region changed greatly, and three provinces had great differences. The economic resilience of Beijing and Tianjin were always at a high level. In the early stage of the study period, the economic resilience of Shandong province was lower than that of Liaoning province, but higher than that of Liaoning in the later stage. The economic resilience of Hebei province was relatively stable. The development paths and economic resilience evolution in the Bohai Rim region were mainly in three stages,namely,exploitation-conservation,conservation-release,and release-reorganization.The cities in the exploitation-conservation stage concentrated in western Shandong and southern Hebei. The cities in the conservation-release stage accounted for 40%and distributed in Liaoning and northern Hebei, while the cities in the release-reorganization stage were few and distributed scattered relatively.Regional economic resilience evolution, industrial structure evolution,as well as adaptive cycle stages presented the characteristics of co-evolution.The number of cities with farming and manufacturing as the main industry composition and driving force of regional economic resilience is the largest, and their industrial structure is relatively stable and it is in the exploitation-conversation stage. The number of cities whose economic resilience was driven by the industrial combination of farming and services, manufacturing and services shows a decreasing trend, and they are in the conversation-release stagy. The number of cities whose economic resilience was driven only by service industry shows an increasing trend. The trend of urban industrial upgrading is obvious, and it is in the stage of release-reorganization.
