The regional differences in territorial spatial functions and their driving mechanisms in China's border areas
The challenges of unbalanced regional development are increasingly highlighted by the differences in geo-setting,resource endowment, and economic development in China's border areas.Against this backdrop, scientific identification of the territorial spatial functions and optimized layout have emerged as essential, along with efficient support for promoting the high-quality development of the border areas. This study aimed to explore the regional differentiation patterns and driving mechanisms of territorial spatial functions in China's border areas, applying the modified coupled coordination model and spatial regression model, based on the utilization of multi-source raster data to measure the territorial spatial functions. The results showed that:(1)From 2000 to 2020,territorial spatial functions of China's border areas exhibited a distribution pattern characterized by high values in the east and south, while low values in the west and north.Specifically, there was rapid growth in the urban development function,a steady increase in the agricultural production function, and a slight decline in the ecological service function.(2)The level of coupling and coordination among the"urban-agricultural-ecological"spatial functions showed relatively little fluctuation both overall and in localized spaces. In the northeastern and southwestern border areas, the coordination of territorial functions developed synergistically, resulting in a high level of coupling and coordination. However,in the northern border areas, the coupling of territorial spatial functions was on the verge of dysfunction, while the northwest and Xizang border areas exhibited a dysfunctional state.(3)The driving factors for changes in the spatial functions of different territories varied.Urban spatial functions are primarily influenced by factors such as socio-economic development and openness to external trade;agricultural infrastructure technology, terrain, and cross-border cooperation are the key drivers of agricultural spatial functions;whereas terrain undulation, climate, and ecological carrying capacity are pivotal factors driving ecological spatial functions.Based on this, continuous efforts should be made to promote regional economic growth, enhance the overall competitiveness of the border areas, and foster open trade cooperation and exchanges, thereby strengthening cooperative relations with neighboring countries.Furthermore, active measures should be taken to protect the ecological environment and ensure the sustainability of efficient agricultural production. These efforts aim to promote high-quality and sustainable development of the region.
