Two decades of meteorological and ecological droughts in Ordos:Spatial distribution and propagation
Drought,as one of the most destructive natural phenomena in Ordos, presents important challenges to ecological protection and sustainable development of the region. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the spatial distribution and propagation of the meteorological and ecological drought in Ordos. In this study,we utilize high-resolution gross primary productivity data and precipitation data to comprehensively analyze the spatial distribution of meteorological drought characteristics(frequency, intensity, duration)and ecological drought characteristics(frequency, intensity, duration)in four types of natural ecosystems in Ordos from 2000 to 2020.In addition,we aim to identify different propagation relationships between meteorological drought and ecological drought in four ecosystems. Our findings reveal that the frequencies of meteorological drought and ecological drought in Ordos occur at the rate of 0.26 times per year and 0.13 times per year, respectively. This indicates that the frequency of meteorological drought transferring to ecological drought is relatively high(>50%)in most areas of Ordos. However, the frequency of drought propagation is low(<50%)in the northeastern part of Ordos. Moreover, our analysis highlights that the meteorological drought and ecological drought exhibit a high correlation in terms of duration. The duration of meteorological and ecological drought exhibits a distinct spatial pattern, with lower durations in the western region and higher durations in the eastern region.Among the four ecosystems, forests and high-coverage grasslands have a longer duration in both meteorological drought and ecological drought. However, the spatial distribution of drought intensity between meteorological and ecological drought varies significantly. In Ordos, the intensity of meteorological drought is higher in the eastern region and lower in the western region, while the intensity of ecological drought is the opposite. In comparison of the drought intensity in four ecosystems, the intensity of meteorological drought is similar across the four ecosystems, while that of ecological drought varies considerably, with the lowest intensity in forests and the highest in areas with high-coverage grassland. This study provides not only a scientific foundation for ecological environment protection in Ordos but also valuable insights for the development of effective drought management strategies to better cope with the effects of climate change.
