Study on the differences in terrace utilization efficiency among farmers and its influencing factors:A case study of 1107 households in Jiangxi,Hunan, and Fujian
Based on the survey data of farmers in Jiangxi,Hunan and Fujian provinces, this paper measured the terrace use efficiency of different types of farmers and analysed its influencing factors by using DEA and Tobit models. The results show that:(1)The total technical efficiency of terrace utilization in the study area is lower than that of flat land utilization, with the two being 0.206 and 0.354,respectively.(2)The total technical efficiency of terrace utilization tends to decrease with the increase of household diversification.(3)Differences in total technical efficiency of terrace utilisation by farmers are mainly due to differences in pure technical efficiency.(4)There are differences in the influencing factors of household terrace utilization efficiency:the maximum land area(X7)and land grade(X10)are the main factors affecting the total technical efficiency of terrace utilization for pure farming households;the agricultural income proportion(X5)and land grade(X10)are the main factors affecting the total technical efficiency of terrace utilization for diversified farming households;labor force cultural level(Xi)and per capita cultivated area(X4)are the main factors affecting the total technical efficiency of terrace utilization for non-farming households. The results of the study are useful for optimising the technical efficiency of terracing in hilly and mountainous areas in the south. The results are of positive significance for optimising terrace resource allocation, improving terrace utilisation efficiency, and ensuring the sustainable development of terraces and food security in hilly and mountainous areas in the south.
