Coevolution of new urbanization and rural revitalization and its citizenization effect
The coordinated development of new urbanization and rural revitalization serves as a pivotal approach to advance the urbanization of rural migrants and realize urban-rural integration. From the co-evolutionary perspective of evolutionary economic geography, this study analyzes the overall trend,spatio-temporal process of co-evolution between new-type urbanization and rural revitalization,as well as their combined impact on the urbanization of rural residents using panel data from 274 cities in China spanning from 2008 to 2022.The findings reveal that:First, new urbanization holds a first-mover advantage, exhibiting relatively superior development dynamics. The overall deviation in strategic focus between the two initiatives has fluctuated but narrowed, indicating an enhanced spatial alignment. The coupling and coordination degree between new-type urbanization and rural revitalization generally shows trends upwards, reflecting an improving synergy between the two.Second, the regional disparities in their coupling and coordination degree have gradually diminished, with the overall variance primarily attributed to inter-regional differences, while intra-regional disparities contribute less significantly.Third,in terms of the urbanization effect, the synergistic development of new-type urbanization and rural revitalization effectively promotes the urbanization process of rural residents. This effect is more pronounced among rural-to-urban migrants with strong urbanization intentions and capabilities, particularly those engaging in cross-provincial migration, having smaller family sizes, and residing in cities for extended periods.
