Progress and prospects of terrace abandonment research
With the aggravation of sloping farmland abandonment in mountainous areas,the phenomenon of terrace abandonment has appeared and continues to expand,which has attracted the attention from many countries and regions.In order to clarify the current situation of terrace abandonment,this paper systematically reviews the research progress of terrace abandonment based on the framework of"pattern-motivation-impact-regulation",and puts forward the future research direction.The research shows that in the 1950s,European countries such as Italy and Spain were the first to have terrace abandonment.After the 1990s,the abandonment of terraced fields continued to expand around the world;up to now,it is distributed in more than 60 countries and regions,among which the abandonment rate of terraced fields in China is close to 10％,and the abandonment of hilly and mountainous areas in southern China is serious.The abandonment of terraced fields is affected by a large number of factors,such as natural environment,the development of society and economy,policies put forward by the government and activities of wildlife.The root cause is that the comparative income of terraced field management is low.The abandonment of terraced fields has both positive and negative effects.The abandonment of terraces has both positive and negative impacts,with positive impacts including the maintenance of biodiversity and the improvement of the soil environment,while negative impacts include the waste of land resources,soil erosion,the loss of food production capacity,the decline in ecosystem services and the decline in the value of farming culture.In order to alleviate the abandonment of terraces,various regions have taken measures such as using terraces according to local conditions,increasing vegetation coverage,issuing agricultural subsidies,introducing protection regulations,and encouraging social organizations to publicize the value of terraces to carry out abandoned land management.In the future,the problem of terrace abandonment may become more serious.The determination and mechanism mining of large-scale abandonment scale,the accounting of landesque capital loss caused by abandonment,and the prevention and control of'rainstorm-collapse-debris flow'disaster chain caused by abandonment need to be studied urgently.
