The manifestation of ethical thoughts on life in Han Buddhism:medical care in Han Buddhist temples in ancient China
The medical care services provided by Han Buddhist temples in ancient China were a manifestation of the ethical thoughts on life in Han Buddhism. This was rooted in the Buddhist doctrine of viewing medical care as the practice of compassion. This effort was facilitated by the presence of monk physicians, medical supplies, and medical scriptures,as well as the support and participation of government and social forces.Their medical care activities can be divided into two forms:internal and external.Internal medical care became increasingly standardized and institutionalized, while external medical care gradually extended to rural areas and more common people.Their theoretical foundation, objective conditions, and main types of medical care all embody characteristics of public service, which continue to have enlightening significance for the manifestation of ethical thoughts on life in contemporary Han Buddhism.
