Yan Fu's Concept of Mutual Learning among Civilizations and Its Modern Significance
Mutual learning among civilizations is the core content of modern Chinese and Western cultur-al exchanges.Yan Fu emphasized that on the path of learning advanced Western civilizations,we should first start from learning Western languages,this was because the advanced science and technology in the world was made out in Western languages at that time,to understand the world's situation,one had to read Western newspapers and periodicals directly.Science is the es-sence of modern Western civilizations,Yan Fu advocated that to follow the example of modern Western political system,we should start from the scientific principle of constructing Western su-perstructure.Since war was the main form of clash of modern civilizations,Yan Fu always had a clear understanding of the two-sidedness of"combination of rules and no rules"and of civilization and barbarism practiced by Western powers and sought a new balance and synthesis in reassessing the value of Chinese and Western civilizations.
