AIM: To explore the correlation between the traditional Chinese medical syndromes and tongue manifestation in AIDS patients by multiple correspondence analysis. METHODS: Totally, 641 AIDS patients were investigated using multi-stage cluster random sampling from one province of China. The questionnaires from 641 AIDS patients were analyzed by multiple correspondence analysis. RESULTS: Cronbach's Alphas were 0.653 and 0.515 and eigen values were 2.610 and 1.948 respectively in two dimensions in the correspondence analysis of tongue manifestation and excessive syndrome. Syndrome of dampness-heat and accumulated interior was related with red tongue, plump tongue and tongue greasy fur. Syndrome of dampness-heat and accumulated-toxin was related with dark tongue and tongue thick fur. Syndrome of accumulated-pathogen skin was related with tongue bleb and thin tongue. Syndrome of liver depression and qi stagnation was related with light red tongue and tongue thin fur. Cronbach's Alphas were 0. 633 and 0.513 and eigen values were 2.484 and 1. 942 respectively in two dimensions in the correspondence analysis of tongue manifestation and deficiency syndrome. Syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi was related with tongue thin fur, tongue greasy fur and light red tongue. Syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin was related with thin tongue and tongue bleb. Syndrome of deficiency of both qi and blood and syndrome of deficiency of lung and spleen qi were related with plump tongue and teeth-printed tongue. CONCLUSION: Multiple correspon- dence analysis shows the relationship between traditional Chinese medical symptoms and tongue manifestation, which has good perspective in the study of traditional Chinese medical syndromes of AIDS.
