Surgieal treatment for 704 patients with gastric cancer
AIM: To summarize the clinical curative effect for the patients with gastric cancers. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 704 patients with primary gastric cancer treated with surgical procedures between 1993 and 2008. RESULTS : When first diagnosed, most patients under study were at clinical stage Ⅲ - Ⅳ and 484 (68. 8% ) patients were with chronic complications. Totally 544 (77. 3%) patients underwent complete resection, 96 cases (13. 6% ) palliative excision and 128 cases (18. 2% ) composite operation. The digestive tract reconstruction was mainly conducted by Roux-en-Y, and post-operation complications were found in 344 cases (48. 9% ). The 5-year-survival rate of the patients treated with complete resection was 44. 1% , palliative excision 3. 4% , but composite operation 0%. CONCLUSION: The most effective treatment for terminal gastric cancer is complete resection.
