Distribution of substance P (SP) and calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP) positive neurons in rat superior olive complex
AIM : To study the distribution of neurons which are positive for substance P( SP) and calcitonin-gene related peptide ( CGRP) in rat superior olivary complex and to explore its significance. METHODS: Using immunohistochemical and immunoflu-orescent double-staining techniques, We examined the distribution of SP and CGRP positive neurons and fibers on rat's brainstem sections. RESULTS: SP positive neurons were located mainly in trapezoid boby (Tz), while CGRP positive neurons were located mainly in lateral superior olive (LSO) and Tz. We also found plenty of CGRP positive nerve terminals, which surrounded both SP and CGRP positive neurons. CONCLUSION: SP and CGRP have some synergistic effect in hearing conduction. SP positive neurons in Tz may probably are involved in the regulation of CGRP positive neurons in LSO, which contributes to the regulation of the nerve activities of olivocochlear bundle.
