Analysis of clinical value of therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancre atography
AIM: To evaluate the clinical value and complications of therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogra-phy (ERCP). METHODS: Three hundred and two cases with cholangiopancreatic diseases were treated with therapeutic ERCP technique in our center from January, 2005 to July, 2008. Clinical data of these cases were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of the 302 cases, the final success rate was 84. 4% , among which the success rate of the first 150 cases was 79. 3% and the subsequent 152 cases was 89.5% respectively. Complications occurred in 11 cases (overall complication rate was 3.6% ). All the complications were cured with non-surgical as well as endoscopic treatments and no death occurred. CONCLUSION: ERCP is an effective and safe therapeutic approach and can be applied to most cholangiopancreatic diseases. The experience of endoscopists plays an important role in the success rate. Most of ERCP-related complications can be controlled by conservative as well as endoscopic treatments.
