Expression of galectin-1 and its correlation with invasion of gastric cancer
AIM: To study the expression of Galectin-1 in gastric cancer and to analyze its correlation with the invasion of gastric cancer. METHODS :Cancer samples and surgical margin of stomach were collected from 30 patients who had undergone surgery in General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University. Realtime quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of Galectin-1 in these samples and the microvessel density (MVD) of these samples were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The expression of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein in cancer and the MVD of cancer were significantly higher than those in tissues of surgical margin of stomach (P <0.05). Significant correlation was found between the expression of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein in cancer and the TNM stage and depth of primary tumor invasion ( P < 0.05 ). The MVD of cancer was statistically correlated with the depth of primary tumor invasion, TNM stage and lymph node metastasis (P <0.05). In gastric cancer, there was a positive correlation between MVD and the expression of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein ( P < 0. 05 ).CONCLUSION: Galectin-1 plays a crucial role in gastric cancer's proliferation and invasion. It could be a valuable index for clinical diagnosis and malignant progression of gastric cancer.
