Effect of lipoic acid on expression of ICAM-1 of lung tissue following renal ischemia reperfusion in aged rats
AIM: To investigate the influence of lipoic acid on the expression of ICAM-1 of lung tissue following renal ischemia reperfusion in rate. METHODS: The model of renal ischemia reperfusion injury was duplicated. The percentage of positive CD 18 polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) in blood, pulmonary index (LI),pulmonary permeation index (LPI),morphological change of lung, changes of mRNA and protein levels were observed by Flow cytometer,RT-PCR and Western blotting. RESULTS: After renal ischemia reperfusion, the number of positive CD18 PMN,LI and LPI obviously increased and the activity of myeloperoxidase in the lungs increased. The expression of ICAM-1 increased obviously. Administration of lipoic acid in advance inhibited these changes and protected the lungs. CONCLUSION: The up-regulation of ICAM-1 expression and the increasing number of positive CD18 PMN in blood probably participate in the lung injury after renal ischemia reperfusion. Lipoic acid may reduce the injury of the lungs by decreasing the number of positive CD18 PMN and down-regulating ICAM-1 expression.
