α-lipoic acid antagonizes effects of lead on bone growth and metabolism in poisoned juvenile rats
AIM: To determine the effects of α-lipoic acid on bone microstructure and bone marrow biochemical indicators in lead poisoned rats. METHODS: SD rats were divided into 2 groups: control group and lead group treated with lead acetate [ 230 ppm]. After 40 d,3 rats from each group were taken for the measurement of lead in blood and bone. The rats in lead group were then randomly subdivided into 4 groups: 1 lead control group and 3 lead groups with different concentrations of α-lipoic acid [30,60 and 100 mg/(kg · d) ]. At the end of the experiment (80 d),the rats were killed and the samples of blood and bone were taken for examination. RESULTS: Blood lead contents in every lead α-lipoic group were lower than those in lead control group(P<0.05). HE staining showed that after treatment with α-lipoic acid, the bone microstructure and AKP immunity class brood in 100 mg lead α-lipoic acid group were significantly different from those in lead control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: α-lipoic acid antagonizes lead toxicity in bone marrow.
