Clinical investigation and orthodontic treatment for impacted maxillary canines of adult patients
AIM: To evaluate the impaction position, frequency, sex difference and management of impacted upper canines in adult orthodontic patients. METHODS: Out of the 3390 cases with various malocclusion treated in Second Affiliated Hospital,College of Medicine,Zhejiang University from January 2001 to December 2007,64 adult patients (24 males and 40 females,80 impacted canines) with maxillary canine impaction were recruited in the present study. CT scan images and panoramic radiographies were taken before and after treatment. Chi-square test was employed to compare the difference of sex, location and treatment methods. RESULTS: The prevalence of maxillary canine impaction in Chinese adult patients in this investigation was 1.89%. The ratio between male and female was 1.67:1 and the ratio between buccal and palatal location was 2.2:1. Space-opening and surgical exposure with orthodontic alignment was the predominant treatment. Significantly more buccally impacted canines were found to have been treated by space-opening and surgical exposure while significantly more palatally impacted canines were found to have been extracted (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: This investigation shows that most buccally impacted canines are found in Chinese adult patients, especially in females. Favorable esthetic effects and good occlusion will be achieved by precise diagnosis together with well-controlled and appropriate treatment approaches.
