Relationship between Smad 4 protein expression and patient survival in cardia and noncardia gastric cancer
AIM: To evaluate the expression pattem of Smad 4 protein in cardia and noncardia gastric cancers and to determine the relationship between Smad 4 and tumor clinicopathological features as well as the survival time. METHODS: Tissue microarray was used to determine Smad 4 protein expression by immunohistochemistry S-P in 78 cardia and 113 noncardia cancer cases. RESULTS : The positive expression rates of Smad 4 protein in the tissues of cardia and noncardia gastric carcinoma were 67.9% and 66.4% respectively. Smad 4 expression was found to be statistically associated with the age and tumor differentiation status(P< 0.05) in cardia gastric carcinoma, while no close relation was found between Smad 4 expression and the clinicopathological features in noncardia carcinoma(P>0.05). Smad 4 positive expression was associated with favorable survival time only in noncardia gastric cancer(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: There exist differences between the expression of Smad 4 and the clinicopathological features in cardia and noncardia gastric cancers. The expression pattern of Smad 4 protein affects survival time in noncardia gastric carcinoma.
