AIM:To evaluate the correlation between the features on MR and pathologic finding of the Balo's concentric sclerosis(BCS).METHODS:MRI manifestations of four cases with Balo's concentric sclerosis were reviewed, all treated with steroid and after the clinical symptoms alleviated, performed the MRI examination.RESULTS:Of the 4 cases,11 lesions showed on MRI.Solitude lesion and multitude lesions occourred in 1 case and 3 cases, respectively. They mainly distributed on the subcortex of cerebral hemispheres and deep part white matter, especiallylocated at centrnm ovale and temporal lobe.Among them,8 lesions appeared as characteristic concentric structure.T_1 weighted revealed 3-5 concentric rings with diameters ranging from 1 to 2.3 cm alternating between hypo-and iso-intensity signal zones. On T_2-weighted,fluid-attenuated inversion-recovery pulse sequence (FLAIR),the above-mentioned rings focus appeared as iso-and hyper-intensity signal with slightly surrounding swelling and poody defined margin. The diameters were slightly longer than on T_1 WI,this finding being consistent with pathological results.Three atypia lesions showed as patching or fried egg. There was 1 to 3 semi-circumi structure within the lesion. On Gd-DTPA enhanced MR scans, lightly liner-like enhancement occurred in one patient.CONCLUSION:Balo's concentric sclerosis has specific MRI and enhancement features,MRI can be used as a main method for the disease and to evaluate the treat effect.
