Study of the relationship between life events and mental health of the elderly who live in nursing homes
AIM: To explore the situation of life events that hap pens in the elderly in nursing homes, and its influence on their mental health. METHODS: Sixteen nursing homes in Xi'an were chosen by random cluster sampling method, The life events and the medical outcomes study 36-Item short-form health survey ( SF-36) questionnaires were administered to 462 of the institutional elderly who were glad to attend this study. RESULTS: A total of 440 qual ified questionnaires were collected. More than half of the subjects (59.6%) had suffered some kinds of life events during the last two years, 27. 7% of them suffered more than two kinds of life events. The total mental health score (role emotion, social function, vitality, mental health)was 287.9 卤71.8. Those who had suffered life events, especially the passive ones (health aggravation, finan cial difficulty, losing things or money, unhappy experiences, conflicts among relatives) , also had a lower mental health score. Health aggravation, financial difficulty, unhappy experiences were three main negative life events which influenced the mental health. CONCLUSION: Passive life events have a bad influence on the mental health of the old, interventions on how to deal with health aggravation, financial difficulty, unhappyexperiences were the main point to promote the elderly's mental health.
