Contrastive analysis of confocal microscopy and histopathologic with the rabbit fungal (aspergillus) keratitis
AIM: To evaluate the value of confocal mictoscopy and histopathological examination in diagnosis of fungal keratitis. METHODS:Twenty-four pigmentary rabbit fungal keratitis model of Aspergillus were built. Confocal microscopy and histopatholo-gial examination were used in 3, 7, 10 and 15 d after aspergillus was inoculated. RESULTS: Aspergillus hypha, spore and inflammatory infiltrates were found by confocal microscopy and his-topathologial in 3, 7, 10 d after aspergillus was inoculated. Most Aspergillus hypha grew in cornea perpendicularly and obliquely. In the anaphase (15 d after aspergillus injection) , a little hypha was found by confocal microscopy while it could not be found by pathological section examination. CONCLUSION: The outcome of Aspergillus hypha, spore and kinds of fungi grew in cornea by confocal microscopy was consistent with histopathological characteristics. Confocal Microscopy provides a means of no wound and fast for clinical diagnosis of fungal keratitis.
