Analysis of Superelevation for Small Radius Curves in Platform Areas
This study proposes a design concept inspired by highway curve superelevation to address the speed limit issue caused by small-radius curves encroaching on effective platforms in an existing line renovation project of vehicle expansion and platform extension. The design involves setting a super-elevation transition section in local sections of the transition curve, and a full super-elevation section at gentle or circular points. The transition curve is segmented and graded to reduce the impact of small-radius curves on effective platforms. The Zhichun Road Station extension project of the Beijing Metro Line 13 expansion and upgrading project is used as a case study to apply the segmented slope of the transition curve. The results show that the proposed plan increases the maximum speed by 12.4 km/h and saves 6 s of operation time compared to the original plan. The study provides a reference for the design of curve super-elevations in existing line renovation projects when small-radius curves invade effective platforms.
