Astaxanthin,a natural carotenoid widely found in seaweed,fungi and crustaceans,exhibits diverse biological activities including antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,anti-tumor,immune-regulatory and neuroprotec-tive effects.As a natural antioxidant compound,astaxanthin can effectively mitigate disease risks within the body and holds significant potential for application in antibiotic-free,safe and environmentally friendly farming practices.Current research has demonstrated the promising utilization of astaxanthin in livestock and poultry production.This review aims to summarize the key biological functions of astaxanthin as well as its applications in livestock and poultry production to provide valuable insights for further exploration and implementation of astaxanthin as a functional feed additive.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2023,35(12):7617-7624]
