Effects of Compound Chinese Herbs on Reproductive Performance,Immune and Antioxidant Functions of Sows and Growth Performance of Their Piglets
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of compound Chinese herbs[prescription com-position:Vaccaria segetalis,Tetrapanax papyriferus,Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort and Rhaponticum uniflorum(L.)DC.]on the reproductive performance, immune and antioxidant functions of sows and the growth per-formance of their piglets.Forty Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire hybrid sows with 1 to 2 parities were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups with 20 replicates in each group and 1 sow in each replicate.Sows in the con-trol group were fed a basal diet, while those in the compound Chinese herbs group were fed the basal diet sup-plemented with 3.25%compound Chinese herbs. The trial lasted for 28 days from 1 week before delivery to 3 weeks after delivery. The results showed as follows:compared with the control group, the milk yield, healthy piglet rate and birth weight of individuals were extremely significantly increased(P<0.01),and the average born process time was extremely significantly shortened of the sows in the compound Chinese herbs group(P<0.05);the milk protein rate, lactose rate,non-milk fat solids and immunoglobulin G(IgG)contents in colos-trum were significantly increased(P<0.05),and the urea nitrogen content in colostrum was significantly de-creased of the sows in the compound Chinese herbs group(P<0.05);sow serum glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)and total superoxide dismutase(T-SOD)activities were significantly or extremely significantly in-creased(P<0.05 or P<0.01),malondialdehyde(MDA)content was significantly decreased(P<0.05),and IgG content was extremely significantly increased in the compound Chinese herbs group(P<0.01);the wea-ning litter weight and weaning individual weight of piglets were extremely significantly increased(P<0.05),the mortality in lactation of piglets was significantly decreased(P<0.05),and the serum IgG content at wea-ning day(21 days of age)of piglets was extremely significantly increased in the compound Chinese herbs group(P<0.01).To sum up,adding the compound Chinese herbs composed of Vaccaria segetalis,Tetrap-anax papyriferus,Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort and Rhaponticum uniflorum(L.)DC.to the diet can shorten the average born process time of pregnant sows and it also can, increase the milk yield and improve the colos-trum composition of sows, improve the immune and antioxidant functions of lactating sows, and it also can in-crease the healthy piglet rate, birth weight and weaning litter weight of piglets, and improve the growth per-formance and immune function of piglets.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(3):1578-1587]
