Research Progress of Plant Extracts Inhibiting Ruminal Methane Emission in Ruminants
Plants and their extracts contain a variety of bioactive substances and are multi-energy efficient,which can be used as natural forage resources or feed additives for nutritional supplementation and disease pre-vention of ruminants.Since the goal of"banning antibiotics"was proposed in 2019,plant extracts have be-come the primary research objects to replace antibiotics,playing an indispensable role.In addition,due to the intensification of greenhouse effect in recent years,a variety of plant extracts have attracted attention due to their characteristics of regulating rumen flora and effectively inhibiting the abundance of methanogenic bacteria.Their wide source,no pollution,and low toxicity make them a class of potential green and natural methane in-hibitors.This review summarized the research progress of plant extracts in inhibiting methane emission,to pro-vide theoretical reference and practical guidance for the realization of methane emission reduction.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(5):2752-2760]
