This experiment was conducted to study the nutritional components and degradation characteristics of Taiwan sweet elephant grass,Guimu No.1 hybrid elephant grass and wheat straw in dairy buffalo rumen.The rumen conventional nutritional components and degradation parameters of dry matter(DM),crude protein(CP),neutral detergent fiber(NDF)and acid detergent fiber(ADF)of the three roughages were determined by nylon bag technology.The results showed that the CP content of Guimu No.1 hybrid elephant grass was the highest among the three roughages,which was significantly higher than that of the other two roughages(P<0.05).The CP content of Guimu No.l hybrid elephant grass>Taiwan sweet elephant grass>wheat straw was in the order from high to low.There was no significant difference in NDF content among the three roughage(P>0.05),and the ADF content of Taiwan sweet elephant grass was significantly lower than that of Guimu No.1 hybrid elephant grass and wheat straw(P<0.05).The effective degradation rates of DM,CP,NDF and ADF of the three roughages were Taiwan sweet elephant grass>Guimu No.1 hybrid elephant grass>wheat straw from high to low.In conclusion,Taiwan sweet elephant grass and Guimu No.1 hybrid elephant grass have high feed-ing value and can be used as high-quality roughage source for milk buffalo,and wheat straw can be further pro-cessed or used with other high-quality roughage.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(6):3693-3701]
