Study on Nutritional Value and Ruminal Degradation Characteristics of Protein Grasses in Mutton Sheep
This study aimed to investigate the nutritional value and ruminal degradation characteristics of protein grass in sheep,in order to provide a theoretical basis for its application in ruminant diets.Chemical analysis methods were conducted to determine the conventional nutritional component contents of protein grass. In addi-tion,the rumen degradation rate and degradation parameters at 2,4,6,12,24,36 and 48 h of 4 conventional nutritional components in protein grass were measured with 3 rumen-cannulated adult mutton sheep(n=3)u-sing nylon bag method. The results showed that the fresh protein grass contains primary moisture of 91.12%,and the contents of organic matter(OM),crude protein(CP),ether extract(EE),neutral detergent fiber(NDF),acid detergent fiber(ADF),calcium(Ca)and phosphorus(P)in dry matter(DM)of this plant were 96.99%,31.43%,2.45%,31.75%,25.45%,0.51%and 0.40%,respectively.Moreover,the rumen degradation rates at 48 h of DM,CP,NDF and ADF of protein grass were 81.05%,82.88%,60.70%and 58.57%,and the effective degradation rates were 60.44%,62.91%,40.53%and 39.26%,respectively.In summary, protein grass contains higher CP and lower NDF and ADF,and its main nutritional components have a higher degradation rate in the rumen of mutton sheep. Thus, the protein grass can be used as a high-quality roughage resource in ruminant production.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(6):3789-3796]
